Fairy personality traits

Fairies have been around in our stories and legends for many years. Books have been written on them, places have been said to be inhabited by them, people even claim to have seen them.

Fairies, just like any fantastical creature born in the imaginations of men and women, can be whatever we wish them to be, take on whatever form we fancy, speak and do the things the writers of their stories make them speak and do. As a reader, I never tire of discovering the different versions of fairies that storytellers come up with. As a writer, I look forward to perhaps trying my own hand at writing something new about fairies someday.

If you could create a new characteristic, attitude, role or practice for the fair folk, what would it be? Cool post! Here is a detailed explanation plus a terrific unit on teaching tales from around the world. Fairy tales have been around for thousands of years, beginning with oral traditions.

These fictional stories come from all cultures and many have their own versions of well-known tales in the English world. Sometimes these tales are thought to have historical accuracy.

They come from a culture where certain elements were once believed to be real, such as ogres, witches and sprites. Fairy tales were originally told or written as much for adults as for children, but often they seem to have been used to teach a valuable lesson.

For example, the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf comes from Russia. It was quite common for wolves to prowl the forests and many children did seem to simply "disappear.

Many cultures use a variation of the wolf as the bad character in their fairy tales. The American Southwest features a coyote, a crocodile is used in Asian stories and dragons may be found in old European tales. The real versions of fairy tales can be quite frightening to read Rumpelstiltskin rips his own leg off when he stomps through the floor in anger!

The Disney movies sometimes aren't much like the original versions! A fairy tale is a story with magical elements. It's actually quite difficult to define this type of literature as many of the characteristics cross over into fables and folklore.

But there are common characteristics of fairy tales share to a certain extent:. It is absolutely essential that a teacher read aloud many of these stories during the unit of study.

They are part of an oral tradition and should be used as such. I prefer to read the "original" tales over the more modern ones as I can tie in cultural elements and perspectives. A suggested plan is detailed in my free download for teaching fairy tales belowbut here are the basic elements I follow:.

The most important thing, to me, is that the children become excited about the genre and take initiative in exploring. This unit provides multiple opportunities for them to improve their fluency, prosody and ability to think deeply about the texts while developing meta-cognition.

I hope you love it too! This is a terrific way to teach the multicultural versions of a lovely story.

Myths and stories about fairies do not have a single origin, but are rather a collection of folk beliefs from disparate sources. Various folk theories about the origins of fairies include casting them as either demoted angels or demons in a Christian tradition, as minor deities in Pagan belief systems, as spirits of the dead, as prehistoric precursors to humansor as elementals.

The label of fairy has at times applied only to specific magical creatures with human appearance, small stature, magical powers, and a penchant for trickery. At other times it has been used to describe any magical creature, such as goblins and gnomes.

Fairy has at times been used as an adjective, with a meaning equivalent to "enchanted" or "magical". A recurring motif of legends about fairies is the need to ward off fairies using protective charms.

Common examples of such charms include church bells, wearing clothing inside out, four-leaf cloverand food. Fairies were also sometimes thought to haunt specific locations, and to lead travelers astray using will-o'-the-wisps.

Before the advent of modern medicinefairies were often blamed for sickness, particularly tuberculosis and birth deformities. In addition to their folkloric origins, fairies were a common feature of Renaissance literature and Romantic artand were especially popular in the United Kingdom during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The English fairy derives from Old French form faieriea derivation from faie from Vulgar Latin fata with the abstract noun suffix -erie. In Old French romance, a faie or fee was a woman skilled in magic, and who knew the power and virtue of words, of stones, and of herbs.

In the sense of "land where fairies dwell", archaic spellings faery and faerie are still in use. Yet, this unrelated Germanic word "fey" may have been influenced by Old French fae fay or fairy as the meaning had shifted slightly to "fated" from the earlier "doomed" or "accursed". Literature of the Elizabethan era conflated elves with the fairies of Romance culture, rendering these terms somewhat interchangeable.

The Victorian era and Edwardian era saw a heightened increase of interest in fairies. The Celtic Revival cast fairies as part of Ireland's cultural heritage. Carole Silvers and others suggested this fascination of English antiquarians arose from a reaction to greater industrialization and loss of older folk ways.

By Ty Hulse Although each fairy is unique their are a number of common traits which many of them hold in common. This is a short list of some of the most common traits which fairies have. Mutable, Anamorphose, Astral, Creators of Illusions Nothing is what it seems in the world of fairies. Castles turn out to be dark caverns, and caverns turn out to be bright palaces. Fairies are in and of themselves mutable beings, always changing form and type.

When a fairy pays a human for services rendered, the enigmatic creatures are never satisfied with simply paying them in money. Fairies instead pay humans with dead horses, dried leaves, twigs, or other seemingly useless items. Items which turn to gold should the person be smart enough to bring it home with them. What are we to take from these strange actions? This makes sense given that fairies appear at least in some respects to be essentially souls. The astral world itself is both less solid and more stable then water for it always changes, always flows, but the beings within it can choose to be solid or can choose their form.

Fairies have no solid bodily substance. Their forms are of matter like ghostly bodies, and on this account they cannot be caught. In the twilight they are often seen, and on moonlit nights in summer. To man this faculty is wanting. He can but slowly come and go, and in his body he must abide. To be able to change and adjust at will; to be anywhere one wanted to be?

There are two possibilities we must consider. The first is that fairies truely are free; that they are the artists that alter everything, even their forms, to get that which they seek.
